Kathryn Gates
I first became passionate about pottery 25 years ago while attending the community Arts Centre in Invercargill. In 1983 I moved with my family to New Plymouth and continued with my interest by attending pottery classes at the Taranaki Polytechnic.

I enjoy creating forms on the wheel, especially platters and bowls, using high-fired stoneware and porcelain. I also work with large slab forms. I decorate my work using Chinese style glazes, also experimenting with ash, shino and barium. Reduction firing the work in a gas kiln to a temperature of 1300C degrees creates a variety of effects and colours.

1985 - I joined the New Plymouth Potters Club, and was President of the Club from 1987 - 2004. I enjoy participating in club activities and attending workshops. I have also been a tutor for new club members.

Have had work selected for the National Exhibitions of the NZSP.

2004 - I was part of the team for 'Taranaki Clay 2004', the NZSP National Convention held in New Plymouth, which was a challenging and rewarding experience.

2005 - 'Bonz Award' Ballentyne's Contemporary Tableware Exhibition.

2009 - 'Merit Award' New Plymouth Potters Annual Exhibition.

I have also had my work selected for the New Plymouth Potters Annual Exhibitions and the Stratford Art Society's Exhibitions.

Recently I achieved a Certificate in Website Design, which I find an exciting new venture.
